Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day!

Brain training games have become immensely popular over the past couple of years. Nintendo may have done the most to popularize the idea with the Brain Age / Brain Training titles for the DS, or at least they got the most media attention. However, there are now scores of similar games available for a variety of computer and gaming platforms. So, are such games effective? And if they are, what kinds of results can be expected, and how long does the benefit (if any) last?

Which ones are you playing? I've got a few brain training games for my Nintendo DS, but have only been playing a couple lately: Flash Focus (good) and Brain Challenge (great). In particular, Brain Challenge (by GameLoft / Ubisoft) is very difficult once you get to the higher levels. It really feels like strenuous brain exercise.
