Brainovo - For Your New Brain's Health

Are you losing your mind?

You accidentally leave something at a friend's house, or forget what you were doing before an interruption. Or you find it difficult to keep up with everything at a meeting, and have trouble solving simple problems. Maybe it's not you at all... perhaps you're caring for a child that has trouble maintaining focus at school, or a senior that's losing the sharpness they once had.

The brain is a mysterious thing, immensely complex and prone to so many different dysfunctions. It may seem like an unsolvable problem. But there's a glimmer of hope; maybe brain ailments can be prevented or cured. There might be things you can do to develop and maintain a fit, healthy, and happy brain. That's the purpose of this site: to help you build your new brain.

At Brainovo, you'll find articles on the latest brain research, videos on important brain-related topics, reviews of brain-related books and software, and more... all provided in a way that's casual, fun, and easy-to-understand. At the center of it all is a discussion forum where registered users can discuss brain health and fitness, share experiences and advice, and discover new ideas. Plus, using this site is always absolutely free.

Ritalin, Adderall, Provigil, piracetam, modafinil... you may already know the names of some of these drugs, examples of a growing class of "smart drugs" that are seeing increased use by students and professionals determined to increase their memory capacity and cognitive ability. Some, like Ritalin and Adderall, are usually known as prescribed pharmaceutical treatments for ADHD. However, their ability to increase mental focus ...... Read More

Control of inanimate matter with your mind... it seems like science fiction, but is rapidly becoming common-place. So common-place, in fact, that major toy manufacturers will soon be releasing toys that allow you to levitate a small object simply by concentrating. The facts that the object is just a ping-pong ball and that the levitating power is a stream of air makes the toy no less impressive, because the toy will only work ...... Read More

Try pulling on just a single strand of a spider's web -- many other strands will come with it because they're connected. Your memory works much the same way, through association of individual memories. Association is the next item to be covered in the Brainovo blog's series on basic memory enhancement. We'll look at the basics of memory association, including how it can be used to aid in memorizing ...... Read More

A previous posting on Brainovo asked the question: Are Brain Training Games Effective? That's a pretty broad question, because it doesn't specify the type of game, who they might be effective for, and in what way. It's probably safe to assume that many of the people playing such games are young or middle-aged, and that they're probably playing these games in the hopes that they can stave off age-related decline of brain ...... Research at the Netherlands Institute for Neurosciences in Amsterdam has shown that poor quality sleep can adversely affect memory encoding. Experiment subjects donned a special skullcap lined with sensors prior to going to bed. When the subjects reached the deepest levels of sleep, a computer monitoring the sensors would set off a beeping alarm -- just loud enough to knock the sleepers out of "slow-wave" sleep ...... Researchers in the UK have discovered that young adults possessing a specific gene associated with Alzheimer's have distinct brain patterns. When relaxing or when performing memory-intensive tasks, people with the gene (APOE4) had busier brains than people with other forms of the APOE gene, as shown with Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI). The hippocampus, involved in long-term memory and the first area known to ...... Read More

For my inaugural posting to the Brainovo blog, I thought I'd cover something useful instead of just writing about whatever's on my mind. So, what would be useful to the largest number of people? I figure it has to be memory enhancement, and since there's so many tools available, this is going to be an on-going series. In this episode, I'll cover the practice known as "chunking".

Now, for an exercise: memorize this list of 23 random digits.
